In 1986, the then owners, the Melleby siblings, gave the farm to Rømskog municipality. Today, Kurøen belongs to Aurskog-Høland municipality, and is a combined village farm and cultural center. The farm's history dates back to 1599, but people have lived in the area since the Stone Age. In 1982, a burial mound was registered on Kurøen. There are remains of both Stone Age settlements and burial grounds not far from the farm. During excavations in the area, flint knives and cooking stones were found.
